Nature, heritage and water hand in hand in Grimbergen
The valley of the Maelbeek, between the centre of Grimbergen and the Brussels-Charleroi Canal, is gradually changing into an attractive place for nature, heritage and recreation. But there is more: water is also given new space!
Park at airport as eye-catcher
The Flemish Land Company (VLM) is working on this transformation through the Maalbeekvallei-Grimbergen land development project. The park at Grimbergen airport is the first major realisation. More greenery, better water collection and extra walking possibilities are being worked on there.
How?
- Water collection: Swales (shallow ditches) and ponds collect rainwater from the airport and other paved areas. This reduces the risk of flooding during heavy rain.
- Green recreation: The old infrastructures, such as the dog school and skate park, gave way to a continuous green park, running from the Humbeeksesteenweg to the Lintbos.
- New bridges and paths make walking even more fun
Water remains the common thread
Water control remains the priority throughout the project. Swales and ponds provide controlled runoff to the Maelbeek. This way, rainwater is collected and can infiltrate into the soil.
Work is also underway in the area around the Tommenmolen:
- Existing ponds will be cleared and redesigned.
- New flood zones ensure that rainwater no longer runs off through the sewer system, but is retained locally.
Come and have a look on Heritage Day!
Curious about the result?
